Chicago’s own VIC MENSA embarks on his debut Australian tour this January/February, playing select headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney as well as playing St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival nationally.
At just 21-years-old, Mensa already has his trajectory set at the top of the hip-hop game. Just one of 12 artists included on the prestigious 2014 XXL Freshman Class, Mensa's intelligent, self-aware lyrics reveal an artist with serious star potential.
Mensa's 2013 breakout mixtape 'INNANETAPE' set the internet alight, with glowing reviews from various tastemakers. Complex, Rolling Stone and XXL all ranked 'INNANETAPE' as one of the best mixtapes of 2013 - no small honour, but indeed warranted.
The year 2014 has been shaping up just as nicely, as Vic Mensa prepares to release his debut EP 'Street Lights'. The lead single 'Down on My Luck', "nails the propulsive throb of deep house and comes equipped with an earworm of a hook" according to Pitchfork and hit number 1 in the Hype Machine charts.
Not to be outdone by his recorded mixtapes, Mensa's live shows are captivating and energetic, displaying his vocal versatility, attempting many different voice pitches with each verse, while rapping with smooth finesse. Showcasing his affinity for infectiously eclectic sounds, applying "whiplash-inducing flow, Mensa forcefully assumes control of the propulsive, grooving beats," raved Consequence of Sound.
"They made a list about Chicago rappers and they skipped me, maybe because I'm so much more," Mensa announced to the audience earlier this year. Come and witness for yourself.
