New Lovers are here, from Sydney. Look it's simple: the New Lovers are a Sydney, Australia band. Get it? In the localising tradition of The Triffids, The Go-Betweens, Ed Kuepper, Patrick White, Sid Nolan et al. They're like all those artists that don't deny where they come from, where they are, which is a damn refreshing alternative to the legions of Sneaky Soundsystem corporate Monday gig bands that start and end as sneaky knock-offs of an LCD Soundsystem "circus band/ run by circus man". The New Lovers are Sydney, just like Joy Division was Manchester, X was Canberra, The Saints were Brisbane, the Oils were Chatswood and the great Birthday Party were Melbourne private school wankers.
They just gave us their first single "Fatal Shore" from their first album 'Performance', which is due out at the end of the year - the tension, the collision and the far off collapse into that Fatal shore of a New Ordered chaos. Or The Fall, if you will - Remember Mark E Messiah Smith's words from the cold north: repetition, repetition, repetition - and you will. Hypnotic, repetitive, repetitive, repetitive, in the positive, Krautrock-infused, duelling reverb guitars, snap drumming, dancing expansive across The Endless Sydney Sea - King Iggy goes in tow, like me and you, just another Passenger.
Do come along.
