Spunk Records & New World Artists present
Sunscreen (EP Launch) plus special guests
Born from garage in Sydney’s inner west, Sunscreen is a band making the ethereal indie rock of your dreams.
A collaboration between friends, the band started one day when vocalist Sarah Sykes invited Alexander McDonald (guitar) and Hugo Levingston (drums) over for a jam in 2016. In the time since they have firmly established themselves in the Australian scene, having supported DMAs, Rolling Blackouts C.F, Jen Cloher and Jack Ladder amongst others. With a sound that’s drawn comparisons to The Go-Betweens and the Cocteau Twins, Sunscreen’s unapologetic live performance and intoxicating sound has been praised for the way it yields power through emotional vulnerability.
Sunscreen’s breakthrough single ‘Voices’ aired nationally on ABC’s RAGE on rotation for six weeks straight upon release. Their debut EP ‘Just A Drop’ was released on indie tastemaker Spunk Records and Sydney-based Dinosaur City Records in late 2017. The EP received airplay on Triple J and community radio stations across Australia. ‘Just A Drop’ also received airplay from college radio in the United States, reaching #153 on the NACC charts during the first week of December 2018.
With the addition of new bass player Oliver Ellis, Sunscreen’s sophomore EP is due for release in August 2019 via Spunk Records. Produced by Simon ‘Berkfinger’ Berkelman (Philadelphia Grand Jury, Art Vs. Science), the energetic 5-track exudes a beautiful toughness; reflecting the psyche of a romantically confused young person trying to survive in the big city. The lead single ‘High Over Love’, released 20th June, is a compelling example of the band’s penchant for dynamic, hook-driven rock, and a testament to their collective growth as songwriters.
The band are excited to embark on an Australia-wide EP tour this October, catch them at The Vanguard on Friday 4th October.
