Come join us to celebrate another cycle of the Sun, the NEW YEAR celebration of the winter solstice of the natives of Abya Yala (aka Latin America) and beyond with folktronica, Latin and organic electronic.

Let's listen to the natural rhythms.

Let's prepare for the longest night of the year.

With roots thousands of years old, it represents the rebirth of the Sun, an opportunity for a new beginning for all life forms. That is why it still is the most sacred ceremony of the Mapuche, Aymara, Quechua, and other ethnic groups from the Andes.

This year we are stoked to be hosting two legends of folktronica in Latin America: Chancha Via Circuito & Barrio Lindo

Lineup:

Chancha Via Circuito (DJ set - Argentina)

Barrio Lindo (Live - Argentina)

Monica Santos (Live Argentinean folklore)

Murga Madre (Argentinean/Uruguayan carnival intervention)

Julia Towers (Colombia)

Cuerpo Negro (Colombia)

Otorongo (Chile via Meanjin)

Chancha Via Circuito is a pioneering project that began recovering Argentinian and Latin American folklore over 15 years ago, re-inventing it to put it on the map of the global electronic dance music. Together with other projects such as Nicola Cruz or Matanza, they called the attention of many. What more to say about this project? His signature sound is likely already familiar to you, and if not, it should be.

Barrio Lindo is another in that cohort of pioneering folktronica artists. His music is the product of a meticulous processing of nature/daily life samples to produce an elegant organic sound with a very special attention to detail. Together with El Buho, he started a record label called Shika-Shika, which has been the stage for many others that came after them, and continues to be one of the most important labels of this movement.

Murga Madre is an artist collective bringing the magic and spirit of Latin Carnival from Buenos Aires to Australia, adding its own original spin. Rooted in the Argentinean carnival tradition, it blends European, African and Latin influences with the unique rhythm of the drumming bombo, through colour, passion, song and dance.

Monica Santos is an Argentinean singer/composer who will be interpreting Argentinean folklore at its best. Mónica plays charango and caja coplera to advocate the musicality from South America. For this night, she has invited the renowned multi-instrumentalist Michel Bestrin, and a dance intervention by the Bolivian dancer Jael Velasco Fuentes. This show will transport you to both the Pampas and to the breath-taking Andean landscapes and soundscapes of her homeland, Jujuy.

To complete the lineup we will have ISU TAKI resident DJs, Julia Towers, Cuerpo Negro & Otorongo, play some of the most exquisite ethno-organica/folktronica tunes from across Abya Yala. Infused with ancient melodies and powerful percussions, including -as usual- some Afro-Latin beats to make you shake it!

ISU TAKI is a collective of Latin-American DJs/promoters that began as a response to the lack of representation of emerging movements of underground dancefloors across Abya Yala (aka Latin America). These movements have in common the vision of re-vindication of the diversity of folkloric and traditional music by incorporating modern electronic beats to traditional melodies. ISU TAKI has been generating a space for new music genres such as folktronica, Andes grooves, Andes step, Afrofuturism, tropical bass, digital cumbia, Afrobeats, and more. As a result, a vibrant community has grown around it, including the installation of the traditional Andean dances troop, Wayra Muru. ISU TAKI has organised events since 2019 across Naarm and now extended to Meanjin, while actively collaborating with other collectives in NSW and QLD.
