THE OUTER SPACE COWBOYS

Imagine a heady mix of old country and western covers and originals blended with contemporary techno dance music. Think Kraftwerk mixed with Patsy Kline and Bobby Gentry thrown in with Roni Size or electro clash Elvis.

This is what the Cowboys call Pill Billy music. They take country music out of the Ozark Mountains and shake  it up with  contemporary dance, hip hop and dub beats over some punk rock guitar, resulting in a hybrid genre that when you listen sounds crazy but oh so right.

Pill billy is performed with a lap synthesiser (3Roy aka 3kShort from Machine Gun  Fellatio), an electric guitar  (Colonel Loveshark from Machine  Gun. Fellatio) and the thrilling dance and tambourine moves of Pearl the Outer Space Cowgirl (Vashti Hughes, much loved Sydney performance artist), with vocals from the Colonel and Pearl.

Classics   are re-imagined with a surprising twist along with original songs from a band that follows the rusted-on country themes of heartbreak, loneliness, drinkin’ and truck drivin’. You’ll love The Outer Space Cowboys’ take on artists like Hank Williams, Elvis and The Velvet Underground.  Yeeeeeeeehhhhhhaaaaaarrrrrr!!

The Outer Space Cowboys have excited audiences at many festivals (including Peats Ridge, Surry Hills, Bondi) and a range of Sydney venues over the last ten years.

THE LOUD HAILERS

are Christa Hughes (Machine Gun Fellatio, The Honky Tonk Shonks, Dick & Christa Hughes, Circus Oz), Ben Fink (Lior, The Whitlams, King Clam) and Ivan Jordan (King Tide, Sickochestra, Voodoo Boogaloo, Jackie Orzacsky, Paul Mac, Abby Dobson).   Born of Christa and Ben’s friendship and inspiration from the great blues artists of the 1920’s and 30’s like Lead Belly, Blind Willie Johnson and empress of the blues, Bessie Smith.  Ivan later joined in and this dynamic duo became a formidable trio, enjoyed by the many who have seen their performances over recent years. Passionate and powerful songs about love, lust, betrayal, revenge and women driven to murder are their hallmark.

“Fink and the inimitable Hughes draw on twentieth century African-American blues, in which the anguish caused by love stews in a seedier world of drugs and booze, and deliciously results in revenge and bloody murder. Fink is a stinging guitarist and Hughes is as convincing singing this material as few Australians have been since Wendy Saddington. She leavens the desperation with humour, and she and Fink gave as primal an Amazing Grace as you’ll hear”
