FRANCES MADDEN
Described by the ABC’s Mal Stanley as a talented young vocalist and pianist and ‘one to watch’, Frances is one of the classiest young entertainers Australia has produced in some time. She’s been selling out jazz and blues clubs around the country so we’re excited she’s back here at The Basement.
It's hard to convey Frances' unique sound and magic on stage unless you've seen her perform. If you can imagine a triangle with Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Edith Piaf at the points, then Frances is the area in between. Except that her voice and style is uniquely her own. She is also a warm and talented composer so when she performs her own swinging tunes and beautiful ballads, they merge seamlessly with the timeless classics she covers. As jazz legend James Morrison put it "Frances has a wonderful feeling for jazz and blues standards but what makes her a real stand-out are her original songs and unique style." Matt Bailey, Presenter of Jazz Vibes on Fine Music 102.5 FM said "Frances' music is a river of original and heartfelt material, truly a creative force not just in the jazz idiom, but as a genuine contemporary songwriter."
Frances will be performing with a seven piece band which includes renown Sydney sax player Jason Bruer on tenor as well as some of the most talented young musos around town. Frances says "we have a wonderful show planned for The Basement which includes some swing, some ballads, some blues, some Bacharach and maybe a little R&B to finish the night. We'll be performing songs from the album as well as a selection of classics and standards. There will be something for everyone, so come along for dinner, bring some friends and we promise it will be an evening to enjoy."
Frances' album If this Were a Dream debuted at #5 on the ARIA Jazz Album chart. John McBeath, Jazz Critic for 'The Australian' newspaper said "the new album by Frances Madden impressed me more than most debut albums do. Frances has an individual expressive ability, a musical professionalism, a good feel for swing in jazz and she plays fine piano." Don't miss this chance to catch Frances and her band here at The Basement!
