Event Details

A year ago, to a full house at The Basement, Mike McClellan launched a new album, Dancing In The Rain. It has been hailed as the best thing he has done since his huge successes in the 70s and early 80s.

Trevor Leeden, writing in Rhythms magazine, said:
"Mike McClellan is as relevant now as he was 40 years ago. Four decades has done nothing to erode McClellan's musical strengths, and on the evidence here he remains one of our finest acoustic singer-songwriters. Dancing In The Rain deserves your attention."

Mike returns this year to the venue he first played in the early 70s, not long after it first opened back in '72. That it remains one of his favourite places to perform is pretty obvious. He's been back regularly over the years, solo, with a band, with his friend Danny O'Keefe and old mates Doug Ashdown and Kevin Johnson - almost invariably to full houses and standing ovations.

Long regarded as a fine singer, in the opinion of many, Mike is singing better than ever. And when he first appeared on the acoustic music scene he was the benchmark against which many young acoustic guitarists measured themselves. To this day he remains one of Australia's most admired players. But, as he will tell you, his playing, for all its brilliance, has always been about serving the song, and the collection of new ones on Dancing In The Rain easily measures up to, and may indeed surpass, the remarkable quality of his early songs.

I Wonder Who You're Waiting For, has been getting enormous reaction in concert as have many from Dancing In The Rain, with reviewers singling out at least seven of the songs among their personal favourites. ABC 702 Drive presenter Richard Glover remarked, "Mike McClellan just keeps getting better and better. It is such a beautiful album. I loved every song."

Of course, no Mike McClellan concert would be complete without a generous selection of his classics - Song and Danceman, The One I Love, Saturday Dance, Rock'n Roll Lady and Good Companions will undoubtedly be on the program.

This year his show will be opened by young singer-songwriter Imogen Clark. Mike saw her perform, for the first time, at the Tamworth Country Music Festival back in January and was very impressed. "She's among the most talented young songwriters I have heard in years. She has enormous potential, is very engaging, sings beautifully, and writes with a maturity well beyond her years. I am delighted that she will open the show."

For Mike this year's concert is a return to familiar territory, "I love playing The Basement. In all the years that I have done so it has never lost its magic. It's a great venue and the audiences are wonderful. They have cheered the old stuff and loved the new songs, which I guess is just about as much as one can ask when you've been around as long as I have."
