Event Details

One of the most talked-about works of contemporary music over the last few years, Matthew Herbert’s acclaimed One Pig comes to Melbourne.

Composer, DJ, performer, producer and agent provocateur, Matthew Herbert is an idiosyncratic voice in contemporary music. 'Matthew Herbert makes music out of sound. Specific sounds. Simple as that seems, it is a practice that was only possibly as a result of one of the most radical and transformative inventions of the 20th century - that of magnetic tape. Once that was introduced into the field of recording, music could be sourced from the entire sonic world, recontextualised, reshaped. The possibility now existed to make anything out of anything. Herbert has remixed musicians as diverse as Bjork and Mahler, has scored film, dance and theatre and is now Creative Director of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Making its Australian premiere, One Pig is one of the most talked about works of contemporary music in recent years. One Pig explores music as a vehicle for us to think about what we eat and how it gets to our plate. With this in mind, Herbert tells the life story of a pig from birth through to the dinner plate through its sounds, with instruments made from the pig itself and Jesse Gerner, Head Chef of The Aylesbury Bar and Restaurant in Melbourne who will be cooking live on stage.

'In an age of such infinite and brilliant possibilities of technique, combined with the urgent politics of now, why have music and musicians lost the urge to challenge, investigate, invent and unite?' - Matthew Herbert

METROPOLIS NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL

This event is part of the 2013 Metropolis New Music Festival, bringing the sound of contemporary London to Melbourne Recital Centre. London's splendour and squalor is the ultimate hotbed of creativity and this year's festival explores this vast maze of music. The sonic magic of composer/conductor/pianist Thomas Ad s' chamber and orchestral music meets the iconoclastic electronica of Matthew Herbert. Drum 'n' Bass, DJs, politics and chamber opera easily (and sometimes uneasily) share the same space.

Three leading composer/performers will be in residence to present their works, and a world wide web of their musical influences and obsessions in concerts, talks and DJ sets.
