Katia Mestrovic is a modern classical harpist-composer and performer from Melbourne. She is graduate of The Sydney Conservatorium of Music (High Distinction, 2022), and student of Alice Giles AM. Her performing accolades include; an upcoming performance as a semi-finalist at the Dutch World Harp Competition; third place in the BASEL International Harp Competition (2023), the Quinquin Foundation Scholarship (2021-2022), The William and Marie Souter Encouragement Awards (2018-2020), and the Bachelor of Music Scholarship (2017).

She will be premiering her new work for trio (harp, viola, and flute) “Entwine - Unravel - Equipoise” today! Recently, she’s written for The Hush Foundation’s project entitled, ‘Magic Sound,’ combining harp and marimba (2022 - ). Previously, she has published 2 works in the 2021 AMEB Harp Syllabus; and has written 2 modern classical harp books with original compositions (2022).

The concert title ‘Essential Resonance,’ is a philosophical principle coined by Carlos Salzedo - the founder of the modern harp. It relates to how composers should understand and approach writing for the harp.  Namely, that its uniqueness resides in its capacity to resonate - the way in which the strings are set in motion, the way in which overtones are allowed to resonate or interlock, and the way that sound decays naturally, or is stopped manually by the hands. All these aspects influence how mood, timbre and colour are created on the harp. I have written works/chosen rep which exemplifies ‘Essential Resonance.’ I wish to share my passion for the instrument, and it’s potential for diversity, power and colour!
