Enter the Jaguar, the freaky funk, electric, gospel group is on tour for the very first time! The Jag, known for their explosive live performance, rich funky beats and enveloping 4 part harmony, will be playing at The Toff, 22nd September. Formed by lead singer Declan O'Driscoll who left the punk scene to create 'groovy tunes', the Jag first started as a fun funk jam experience, and in short time became a group writing originals, supporting acts such as Katchafire, Hot Potato Band & Tijuana Cartel.
With the upcoming release of their debut album 'K.O.' recorded at Parliament Studios (Middle Kids, Jezabels), they're bringing a night of high energy, smooth grooves and good times. Supported by local music legends, Karate Boogaloo and Obscura Hail, its definitely a night to mark in your calendar.
Karate Boogaloo
Featuring members of The Cactus Channel, Mount Den, Brenda, Jnbo, Leisure Centre, Frida and Laneous, plus many more, Karate Boogaloo came together during a time of great change, with their number one goal being to learn how to play other peoples music. Karate Boogaloo did so for years, however during the past three their path has diverged and instead they have now fallen into the trap of writing their own music. Music for the depths of the night and heights of the day with no compromise for the dreariest of occasions. With Australia's first James Brown Christmas Funk Tribute 45 under their belts Karate Boogaloo have been tearing up dance floors and subsequently all the pages from all the rule books. With the possibility of an immense tour of the Southern Hemisphere in the works Karate Boogaloo are ready, steady, going to take to the world stage before you can even whisper the ode "Karate Boogaloo". Make no mistake, this is a band with the world under their fingertips. What more could you want? Probably not much.
Obscura Hail
Conceived on NSW's South Coast in 2006, and now buried alive in Melbourne's North, Obscura Hail is a testament to the indie dream; writing, recording and releasing self-contained albums from an ad-hoc bedroom studio.
Sparked by an irrational fear of memory loss via mercury poisoning from an amalgam tooth filling, Obscura Hail embodies a routine of unpacking personal, nostalgic, and ontological thoughts with urgency. A commitment to the craft has cultivated an extensive backlog of experimental demos, binaural field samples, and official releases, all leaping erratically between definitions for the sake of sincerity of reflection.
His live performances are cross sections of this decade long process, baring the motifs of galloping finger work and a politely quiet vocal delivery. The ensemble has evolved from a solo expression, through a barbershop quarter, now resting as a three-piece outfit with a fittingly obscure Nintendo DS drum machine, so to translate the recent high energy the project has outputted ('ALARM' EP, 'Pizza' EP) and present a grander reinterpretation of previous works.
