Formed in late 2019, just a few short months before the pandemic, Empress is a unique contemporary ensemble centring around powerful three-part vocal harmony, supported by synth-based electronic dance grooves. Rising quick and fierce in the Melbourne scene, Empress’ debut release of “baby” is long-awaited and much anticipated by their already established and expanding audiences. 

Packed with wondrous sounds and intriguing sonic ideas, the six-piece collective – fronted by Grace Robinson, Stella Dunai and Matilda Pungitore – is not only explosive in their musical output, but are also passionate about creating platforms and opportunities for young women, especially in the Melbourne electronic music scene where there seems to be a scarcity of female-fronted bands. 

Despite their period of short hiatus to focus on recording their debut album, Empress’ first headline of 2022 will be an unmatched celebration of new music and new directions. Joined on stage by sydney-based neo-soul powerhouse Natalie Slade, and the multi-disciplinary, innovative sound facilitator Aarti Jadu, this showcase of fem/GNC identities in electronic music is one to cherish. Topped by first-class Claddy on DJ duties, this will be an event for the soul and the dancing feet.
