20 piece Jazz Big Band

Dr V’s Swing Thing is a 20-piece jazz big band performing the entire breadth of the jazz canon including sophisticated new music to classics from the swing era and beyond. The ensemble delivers a tightness and enthusiasm for the genre rarely seen in Australian big bands, informed by a passion and sustained commitment to challenging its members with exciting, dynamic yet accessible music.   

They are joined tonight by fabulous Sydney singer Jo Fabro, whose charismatic and spectacular vocal performances always impress the crowd. 

Formed in 2001 by Enigmatic trumpeter, ARIA winning artist, and fondly remembered ‘Dr of Jazz’, Vlad Khusid, comprising jazz alumni from Sydney Grammar School. Since 2023, the group has been under the musical direction of Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Lecturer and Australian Big Band luminary David Theak, who aspires to continue Dr V’s love of jazz and big band by leading the band with the spirit in which it was formed. 

The group has performed concerts all over Australia including Darwin, Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Hobart, Manly and Orange.
