Perth-based, Albany-native CARLA GENEVE has released her new single 'The Right Reasons'.
Premiered via triple j Good Nights, the track is the second taste off her debut full-length due in 2021 via Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control Records. To celebrate the release, Geneve embark on a Regional WA Tour with dates spanning from November 2020 - February 2021.
'The Right Reasons' is an exercise in finding strength through vulnerability. "It took me a long time to write The Right Reasons, I think I probably wrote 6 or 7 entirely different versions," recounts Geneve. "Even though so much art is inspired and created in a cathartic way on the topic of mental illness, it’s still a difficult thing to write about, and to share about. This song is pretty straight up. I wanted to shine a bright light on some of my darkest experiences because it makes sense to me that radical vulnerability could be the first step to radical self-acceptance. And without self-acceptance, I feel it’s very difficult to build profound and meaningful connections with those around you."
"The song also has themes of hesitation to seek professional psychiatric help, which I believe can only come from a place of an illogical societal taboo," Geneve continues. "I wholeheartedly advocate for psychological health to be viewed in the exact same manner as physiological health."
The accompanying video was filmed in Geneve's house with her band and directed by close friend Duncan Wright. "The song is about vulnerable and uncomfortable things, so I wanted to feel safe and at home during the pretty intimidating experience of putting my face to the song," explains Geneve.
'The Right Reasons' follows her climactic single 'Don't Wanna Be Your Lover', released earlier this year, ahead of the since cancelled SXSW 2020, where Geneve was scheduled to play eight showcases and touted as a one-to-watch in NPR's Austin 100.
Backed by a captivating show and unique brand of brutally honest lyricism, Carla Geneve has established herself as one of Australia's most prominent up and coming artists after the release of her breakout debut self-titled EP. A fact futher solidified with her recent 'Song Of The Year' Grand Prize win at the 2020 WAM Awards (Western Australian Music Awards) for EP track '2001' - her second consecutive win and the only artist to win twice in the history of the awards.
At just 21-years-old, Geneve has played sold-out shows and festivals including Laneway Festival & Falls Festival and has toured with artists including Cat Power, Kurt Vile, Belle & Sebastien, Fred Armisen, Julia Jacklin and more.
