Topher Grace says he’d “for sure” take part in a ‘That ’70s Show’ reboot
From 1998 until 2006, That ’70s Show provided a stylised retelling of what life was like back in the ’70s for a bunch of high school-aged kids. Now, as we get closer to the program’s 20th anniversary, lead actor Topher Grace has revealed he would be on board if a reboot was to ever be undertaken.
Ending in 2006 after eight seasons and 200 episodes, That ’70s Show was a cult phenomenon which spawned a dedicated fanbase, and launched the careers of many of its young cast, including Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis.
While actor Topher Grace, who portrayed lead character of Eric Forman, left the show at the end of the seventh season to undertake a film career, he has now expressed interest in returning to Wisconsin’s Point Place, though he concedes that the idea would be somewhat unfeasible.
“I would do it for sure because that was a very wonderful time for us,” explained Grace in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “We were all very close, having that experience every single day with each other.”
“It was great to broadcast it out once a week, but, like, I’m still great friends with those guys. So the fact that someone would pay us to go [hang] out together,” he continued. “If someone said to you, “What if I got your whole high school class back together and you hung out for a year?” Yeah, I don’t think it will happen. It would be so hard to bring that crew together.”
“For me, I’d do it if no one ever saw it. Just ’cause it would be great to hang out with them for a week or something.”
Topher Grace also touched upon the allegations of sexual assault that were brought upon Danny Masterson, who plays the character of Steven Hyde, in March of 2017.
“You know, I hesitate to say that I never saw any of that behavior because I feel like it sounds like I’m defending him, but the truth is I never saw any of that stuff,” Grace explained. “I was, of that cast, the most boring. So when it came to going out after the show and partying, I just was boring.”
If a reboot of That ’70s Show is to go ahead though, there are a number of questions to face. Firstly, considering that the show ended when the ’80s began, what would it focus on? Would we have to completely ignore that awful That ’80s Show sequel? Or would it simply be updated, taking place in 1996 – the same time difference between its setting and the date of its premiere?
Only time will tell if a reboot of the show will indeed occur, but let’s face it – the chances are looking pretty slim.
