Resident Evil 2 remake revealed at E3 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC

Resident Evil is not a series short on sequels, remasters, remakes and spin-offs, but one thing that fans have been clamouring for like zombies heaving themselves against a chain-link fence is a full-fat remake of one of the series’ most well-loved entries, Resident Evil 2.

Thankfully Sony have busted out some brilliant news, then, during their E3 conference, letting fans get a glimpse of the long-teased update to the PSX classic, with a suitably-cheesy announcement video that drew cheers and chuckles from the E3 crowd.

As CNET reports, we’ll see the game on January 25, 2019, only a casual three years after it was originally announced, and the good news for non-Sony fans is that it’ll also be making its way to Xbox One and PC.

While some fans still swear by the original’s ‘tank-style’ control scheme, saying its clumsiness only helped to ratchet up the tension, most will be happy to know that the developers are switching things up and building the game around the over-the-shoulder camera that revitalised the series from Resident 4 onwards.

It’s also ditching the pre-rendered backgrounds of the original, as you’d expect of a modern update, and will be fully 3D-modelled while also running in 4K. The graphics, while not super-slick by any stretch, are still well ahead of the LEGO-brick zombies of the PSX era, and should be more than gory enough for the nostalgia crowd.

Scoring very well upon release, the original also blew most of its 1998 contemporaries away as far as sales go, becoming the fastest-selling game in the U.S. at the time and racking up just shy of 5 million copies when all was said and done. Remaining the series’ most successful single-platform game, it’s no wonder so many gamers have been hanging for a modern take.

We’ll await more info for now, and pencil January 25 into our diaries for a one-way trip back to Raccoon City. Until then, check out the new trailer above, and the original reveal below.
