Panic! At The Disco have been nominated for musical theatre’s most prestigious award
One of the defining factors of the mid-00s wave of emo was its proclivity for theatrics. Fit with intricate narratives, bold costumes and weird and wonderful songwriting, bands like Panic!, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy mastered the balance between crafting a heavy pop punk sound whilst taking in elements from a slew of outside influences.
Now, it seems like those beyond the world of black eyeliner and heart-on-your-sleeve jams have come to realise its genius – the most esteemed theatre in the world, Broadway.
It was announced yesterday that Panic! At The Disco have been nominated in the category for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics), written for none other than ‘Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical’. Brendon and Co are nominated alongside the likes of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, John Legend and The Flaming Lips – quite the diverse and talented bunch.
Brendon composed the track ‘Just A Simple Sponge’ for the musical which is currently receiving massive praise amongst musical theatre fans. Check out the track below – it’s definitely got a signature Panic-esque flair, featuring a soaring vocal melody and a hugely anthemic hook.
The band took to Twitter to express their excitement at the nomination – “Started at bikini bottom now we here!”

As you’re well aware, Brendon recently wrapped up his very own Broadway stint, performing in the acclaimed musical ‘Kinky Boots’ last summer, in which he was responsible for boosting attendance by 90%.
