John Oliver ‘quits’ Last Week Tonight following Russell Crowe honour
John Oliver, the English host of American satirical news program Last Week Tonight has appeared to quit the show following the culmination of his ongoing back-and-forth with none other than Russell Crowe.
You might remember how back in April, Russell Crowe held a divorce auction in which he sold off a lot of his personal items, including guitars, movie memorabilia, and a lot of other various items.
Well, it just so happened that John Oliver decided to throw down a bit of cash in order to help out the last Blockbuster store in America, which has been obviously struggling in recent years. And if that’s the point of the tale where you’re raising your eyebrows, you might want to suspend your disbelief, because it’s about to get a whole lot weirder.
Operating under the idea that some famous movie memorabilia would bring in the crowds to the store, Oliver sent the Alaskan video store Russell Crowe’s jockstrap from the movie Gladiator, which he purchased for the princely sum of $US7000 ($9000).
Moved by his rather large purchase, Russell Crowe soon sent out a Tweet thanking John Oliver for his generosity as he mused about how he should make use of the funds. It didn’t take long though, with Crowe Tweeting out a video just last week explaining how Oliver’s fund had been used.
I think this is such a wonderful random act of kindness that I am planning now on how to best use the @iamjohnoliver money he spent on groin protectors and such .
Given his often shown genuine love for Australians and Australia , it’s got to be something special . https://t.co/NcziHy5A2H— Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe) April 17, 2018

Yes, thanks to John Oliver, Australia Zoo now has its official ‘John Oliver Koala Chlamydia Ward’ which, despite the chuckles of those in the audience, looks like it’s set to help a lot of koalas who are battling the disease.
Of course, in true form, John Oliver responded by taking the opportunity to announce that he’s quitting the show, having supposedly achieved all the goals he had set out to achieve when the series first began.
“Back when this show started, I wrote down my one and only goal for it… a koala chlamydia ward,” he explained. “What I’m saying here is, we have accomplished everything we set out to do on this show, so we are fucking done here.”
As the lights dimmed and John Oliver packed up a box of his belongings, it started to look as though he wasn’t joking, bidding farewell to the crowd before taking his leave.
Of course, fans online were quick to question whether or not Oliver’s actions were serious, or just a humorous publicity stunt:
Part of me knows John Oliver is joking. But at the same time a need verification that this is not the last episode of #LastWeekTonight pic.twitter.com/uDYPGou6rc

Thankfully though, you won’t need to worry, because as one Twitter user discovered, John Oliver is under contract with the show until at least 2020, meaning that you can expect him back on your screens when the next episode premieres on May 13th.
