Her Sound, Her Story to examine Australia’s problematic music industry

Jen Cloher called it “the documentary Australian music has been waiting for”.

Her Sound, Her Story, which the significant social impact women have within the Australian music industry, premieres next week in Sydney (July 11) and Melbourne (July 12) with a Q&A with Missy Higgins and Dallas Frasca afterward, and again at Splendour In The Grass (July 22).

Featuring 40 conversations with women in the industry, including Tina Arena, Zan Rowe, Stella Donnelly, and Camp CopeHer Sound, Her Story addresses our country’s gender parity and pushes for collaboration and positive change.

Research outlined in the documentary shows 70% of music teachers are female and 50% of music students are female, yet 80% of songwriters are male.

Speaking to the ABCHer Sound, Her Story co-filmmaker Michelle Grace Hunder said:

“There’s no easy solutions. It’s also going to take time. Hopefully, it’s going to get better. Probably won’t happen [with] the next [festival] line-up that’s announced but two or three years time, getting those stats up every year would be encouraging.”
