First Nations Artists Take Over Fitzroy's Iconic Charcoal Lane Restaurant

Gertrude street's iconic Charcoal Lane restaurant is set to host a series of intimate live performances showcasing some of the best emerging and established Indigenous talent including Bart Willoughby, Fred Leone, BUMPY, and Lauren Sheree.

Operated by Mission Australia, Charcoal Lane pairs fine dining with a training program for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander hospitality students. This unique series will also offer guests an extended sit-down, catered experience with a focus on native Australian cuisine.

"Live at Charcoal Lane will provide a unique and intimate experience to see some of our most exciting and celebrated Indigenous acts, established and emerging up close and personal, while enjoying native cuisine in Yarra's only Indigenous restaurant." Press Play Presents producer Sean Simmons said.

Tickets for the Live at Charcoal Lane series will set you back between $80 - $90 per person for 2-courses, with a 3-course option also available. More info below.

Bart Willoughby

Born on the Koonibba Mission in Ceduna South Australia a Pitjantjatjara man of the Kuthatha tribe on his father's side and Mirning through his mother, Bart Willoughby first came to prominence in the late '70s in the Band No Fixed Address. They were the first indigenous band to tour internationally and sign a record deal. 

Willoughby has since continued to travel Internationally promoting his music and culture and in 2016 Willoughby, along with the original line-up of No Fixed Address were inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame. 


Bumpy

Bumpy is a proud Noongar woman from regional Victoria whose music presents an introspective view into her truths as a First Nations artist.

As well as performing solo and in full-band form, Bumpy has spent the last several years performing with First Nations Hip Hop Collective, DRMNGNOW, jazz-infused psych-soul quintet Squid Nebula, and has been sighted on stages across Australia such as Rabbits Eat Lettuce, Strawberry Fields, Grampians Music Festival and St Kilda Festival.


Lauren Sheree

Lauren Sheree is a 23-year-old singer and songwriter who, since moving to Narrm (Melbourne) in 2016, has performed at festivals and venues all over the state. Lauren has become an exciting new addition to the Melbourne music scene, using the ukulele and her soulful voice, paired with powerful lyrics to explore growth through the art of catharsis.


Fred Leone

Fred Leone is a well-respected community leader, with strong Australian Aboriginal, Tongan, and South-Sea Islander heritage. Fred is one of the Butchulla Songmen, a language custodian, and a ground-breaking, award-winning artist who works across genres and mediums to bring a distinctly original voice to his performances and recordings.

Fred is also the founder of QLD's only Indigenous-owned and operated record label Impossible Odds Records.
