TEK* 2013 Opening Night!

All are invited to celebrate the opening of the Tekstar 2013 Winter Festival with a spectacle of light, sound, art & technology for kids of all ages. Running across the Northern Rivers of NSW from June 14-23, the festival will feature a series of showcase events & digital workshops to inspire the Tekstar in all of us.

An evening of audio visual wonders including a new interactive show by percussion powerhouse Ben Walsh (The Bird), Hollywood Burn by Aussie video remixers Soda_Jerk, interactive dancer Kate Sicchio (UK), experimental vocal synth duo Swamprattts w animations by Ollie Buckworth, international technologist Paolo Cirio, plus the launch of the MEMEBRAIN 48-hour tech marathon networked live with the International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA2013).

ABOUT BEN WALSH & LOOP ZERO

Ben Walsh has been the rhythmic backbone for many artistic projects over the last 17 years. He has played the whole gamut, composing & conducting his "Orkestra Of The Underground" Drummed his way around the globe as the ringleader of the Internationally acclaimed Hip Hop Circus act "The Tom Tom Crew" shared the stage with some of the most distinguished drummers on the Planet, Billy Cobham, Airto Moiera, Ali N'jaye Rose, Kodo, Aneesh Pradahn to name but a few.

Now both as an artist & musician he has taken to the stage alone, furthering the boundaries of his performance, writing & directing his 5th solo work: LOOP ZERO - an audio visual explosion exploring Humanity, technology and reality.

A conceptuality rich, high octane club event, LOOP ZERO takes you between the worlds of a multimedia installation and a live music performance, this show is predominantly inspired by the many odd instruments that spring forth from Ben's imagination And delivers a solid dose of Walsh's trademark high energy drumming style that has taken him around the globe. Melodic, Rhythmic and pure Scientific LOOP ZERO plays with varying notions how we shape and are shaped by technology in our world past and present.

Ben performs upon instruments of his own creation a plethora of sonic delights, technological innovations designed by Machina aka Kim O'Sullivan.

The Gravity Scratch
A precise rhythmic version of the crossfader, allowing Ben to scratch as fast as he can drum, using live visuals instead of vinyl he cuts and spins up a visual and aural storm over his drumbreaks.

The Vocal Synth
Voice is transformed in to floor shaking subsonic adding basslines to his drumbeats in real-time.

The Kotoor
Part Koto Part Santoor this is a zither like melodic percussive instrument played with two sticks.

Stomp Sensors
Using nothing but a bunch of junk objects a pair of sticks and a hitech pair of triggered HiTops. Ben uses his feet to trigger a range of sounds such as a field full of marching band drummers while the top half of his body drums in the physical realm. A hybrid of dance and drumform this very visual movement based music is a modern day take on the one man band.

The Monocello
Haunting and surreal, an electronic cello designed as a homage to Leon Theremin's first instrument.

And...

The Wheel
A multi-directional 8 piece drum rig where Ben is in effect a human pendulum, and every stroke has an opposing one.
