Fremantle to Celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday with Ocean-Inspired Event at Freo.Social

Fremantle will honour the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough with a unique cultural event celebrating his extraordinary legacy and enduring message about the future of our oceans, which is at the heart of his most recent documentary, Ocean with David Attenborough.

Presented by Freo.Social — OCEAN: A Celebration of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday — is timed to coincide with Attenborough’s centenary on Friday 8 May 2026 and will bring together film, science, live music, and immersive visuals.

“Sir David Attenborough has shaped how generations of people see and understand the natural world,” said James Legge, Director of Freo.Social.

“We wanted to mark his 100th birthday in a way that felt meaningful — by bringing the community together to celebrate his extraordinary legacy and reflect on the message at the heart of the film.

“This is a chance for Western Australians who care deeply about the ocean to share this special moment.”

The evening will begin with a free screening of one of the most powerful environmental films of our time Ocean with David Attenborough.

Following the film, respected ocean environmentalist and Prime Minister Award winner, Professor Michael Wear – owner of Tidal Moon and a Mulgana Traditional Custodian of Shark Bay – will discuss the film’s message and highlight the opportunities available to protect and help restore our oceans.

The night will then transform into a vibrant, ocean-inspired celebration featuring live music from Grammy Award-winning artist Lucky Oceans, guitarist and songwriter Rick Webster and the Imperial String Quartet, as well as immersive visuals, special guest appearances, and curated DJ sets throughout the evening.

Speaking about the film David Attenborough said, “My lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. Over the last hundred years, scientists and explorers have revealed remarkable new species, epic migrations and dazzling, complex ecosystems beyond anything I could have imagined as a young man. In this film, we share some of those wonderful discoveries, uncover why our ocean is in such poor health, and, perhaps most importantly, show how it can be restored to health. This could be the moment of change. Nearly every country on Earth has just agreed, on paper, to achieve this bare minimum and protect a third of the ocean. Together, we now face the challenge of making it happen.”

“Protecting 30 per cent of the ocean by 2030 is one of the clearest and most practical steps we can take for marine life and for the health of the planet,” said Professor Michael Wear.

“When marine areas are strongly protected, ecosystems can recover, biodiversity can return, and ocean resilience improves — including through the protection and restoration of vital habitats such as seagrass meadows. The science is clear: if we want a healthy ocean for future generations, we need to move faster.”

We honour and acknowledge the Whadjuk Nyoongar people as Traditional Owners of the land on which we work and live. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging and recognise that the land and sovereignty has never been ceded.
