Duke of George presents

Jamie Oehlers and Lucky Oceans

Ever since Lucky Oceans saw John Coltrane play in Philadelphia in 1966, he has been in wonder of the great saxophonist/composer’s work. Decades later, across the world in Perth,  Jamie Oehlers devoted himself to studying Coltrane’s amazing legacy. They have talked about doing it for years, but Jamie and Lucky are finally teaming up to play a show of Coltrane’s compositions, along with other quintessential pieces from the golden age of jazz, by Miles Davis, Oliver Nelson and others.

Jamie went on to win an international sax competition and ‘Australian Jazz Musician of the Year’ in the noughties and Lucky was nominated for 8 Grammy Awards, winning two of them. The two played together briefly in a group that played the work of Thelonious Monk but haven’t played together since so this is a momentous occasion. They’re joined by Ben Vanderwal, one of Australia’s most in-demand and versatile drummers and young bass phenom Alistair Peel.

Like Lucky’s shows with Troy Roberts, this will be a unique and popular show given how unusual it is to hear steel guitar in a jazz context.
