Donato Dozzy. (Rome, Italy)

What is there to say that hasn’t already been written about Donato Dozzy?

A few things. One being that he was the singular reason that Strange Signals came into existence.

And the other that he was supposed to come out here in 2020 for our tenth anniversary. Obviously that didn’t happen, it was no time to celebrate. But here we are in 2023. So it’s our 10 year anniversary + 3 and we’re making up for lost time, in a big way.

Is Dozzy the world’s singular, best DJ? We think so. Arriving to this realisation in 2010, we had the long standing Berghain/Panorama Bar resident out here all the way back in 2011, playing in a dark room half full of VERY LOUD speakers on Parramatta Rd. Since then, the rest of the world has caught on, majorly. Two further visits to Sydney, one as Voices from the Lake (with Neel) and another solo, it’s now been a full 8 years since he’s graced our shores.

What’s happened since?

Well, a lot. His sets at Japan’s Labyrinth are spoken about in hushed tones. He’s released instant classic techno and experimental records, including landmark “Plays Bee Mask”. He’s deep dived and surfaced the skankiest of the skank dub and bass music. Has written proper music for arts festivals, charted with a romantic ode to psychedelic Italy as “Il Quadro di Triosi” with Eva Geist, turned out an 80’s throwback album and yet he still turns up to work the DJ booth, smashing festivals, Berghain, and local nightclubs the world over with equal enthusiasm. His musical knowledge is unsurpassed and he is still getting better. A scary thought.

Sometimes it’s best to not spoil the surprise. So we won’t. But we are encouraging Donato to play whatever he wants; techno, weird stuff, hidden rituals, bass, psychedelia, voodoo mantras, washed in obscurity and groove taking you deep into this simulation and out again, infinite times over.

Hold on. Let go. Watch out for the Maestro…

</tldr> Straight up insane music played by the best DJ in the world that will make you rethink your existence

Tangela (Eora. Sydney, Citrus)

Is Tangela a relative newcomer to the Sydney scene? Maybe. The last few years have been a bit of a blur. Undeniable is the impact she’s made in this city since the blur lifted and she stepped up to the decks.. Warehouses, rooftops, clubs, and riverside doofs have been rocked with her musical intuition - she’s always been here, right? Right?

If you’ve been to the right places in Sydney over the past couple of years, there’s a great chance you’ve heard one of her highly impressive sets. Versatile, metamorphic, and increasingly diverse, Tangela has an ability to thread a needle through off-kilter sounds and genres yet totally rock the floor - and have you asking for the track name, label and artist. (note: You won’t find it on Spotify, or Shazam)

D.Street resident, vinyl slinger and weekly radio show host, she embodies how to play music at the right time, right place. Depth and breadth in equal measure, with an ability to hold down a fussy dance floor. With a promise of gloopy, weird and slurpy -  Tangela is the perfect partner in musical crime for this special occasion.

Matt Costain (Eora, Sydney, Strange Signals)

The driving force behind Strange Signals, it is fitting to have Matt play the belated 10th birthday of this Sydney institution. He brings a unique take on deep electronics and techno; shifting atmospheres, hypnotic psychedelia and beats from other places, through to Fourth World rituals.

Matt’s set will be a nod to the sounds and artists that have created and informed Strange Signals over the past 10 + 3 years. Lucky 13? Expect a palette of unpredictable musical madness.
