Event Details

Tales from the Eastern Suburbs (CD LAUNCH) is a night of original songs performed by very young musicians (aged between 8-16) who attend a music school nicknamed 'Kings Cross Conservatorium'. The school is in one of the grand old houses on Victoria St saved from developers by activist Juanita Neilsen. Perhaps influenced by her spirit (she's rumoured to be buried next door) or the tragic circumstances of Juanita's death, this CD and concert features surprisingly serious songs written by predominantly junior school age writers.

This launch night showcases some remarkable creativity as well as the positive effects of many a lesson learning one's favourite music. Be it Adele, The Jezebels or Lana Del Ray, the teachers at the school allow the students to lead when it comes to choice of genre. Currently there are over 150 who learn, rehearse weekly and have formed bands such as Romeo & The Juliets and Electric Prime Minister to name a few.  Staffed by musicians from Sydney bands including You Am I, Cabins, Straight Arrows and Van She and armed with a recording studio, the school is the brain child of Stephanie Bourke, ex- administrator of Melbourne's legendary Rock'n'Roll High School which operated long before the spurious term 'rock school' was ever heard by anyone anywhere. 'Kings Cross Conservatorium' is strictly a word of mouth organisation and this evening is a rare opportunity to hear young and natural songwriting from what could be the next generation of Australian songwriters.
