British composer, DJ, producer and agent provocateur, Matthew Herbert headlines Metropolis New Music Festival 2013. Purchase a 3-concert package & save!

Metropolis New Music Festival 2013 is a boundary-pushing series of concerts, talks and DJ sets devoted to new music.

Matthew Herbert headlines Metropolis 2013. With his provocative mix of sonic magic, he's remixed artists as diverse as Bjork and Mahler, scored multiple film, dance and theatre projects, is Creative Director of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and now, he presents 3 diverse projects as part of Metropolis New Music Festival plus a soon-to-be-announced DJ set.

One Pig (13 April) is one of the most talked about works of contemporary music in recent years. Condemned by PETA and celebrated by music (and pork) lovers alike, One Pig explores music as a vehicle for us to think about what we eat and how it gets to our plate. Direct from its Australian premiere in Sydney, Herbert tells the life story of a pig from birth through to the dinner plate through its sounds, with instruments made from the pig itself and Jesse Gerner, Head Chef of The Aylesbury Bar and Restaurant in Melbourne who will be cooking live on stage.

The End of SIlence (12 April) is an improvised soundscape devised from a 10-second recording of war photographer Sebastien Meyer being bombed by a Gadaffi war plane in Libya in 2011. On first hearing, the recording is terrifying but at the end of the set, once Herbert has finished mixing, layering and manipulating the sounds, will you still feel the same way?

Made of Music (8 April) is the world premiere of a work commissioned by Melbourne Recital Centre. Using sounds generated by the Hoop Pine which wraps the interior of Melbourne Recital Centre's Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Herbert brings the expquisite space to life, demonstrating how the Hall is not only a venue for music but made of music itself.

"In an age of such infite and brilliant possibilties of technique, combined with the urgent politics of now, why have music and musicians lost the urge to challenge, investigate, invent and unite?" - Matthew Herbert
