The M1

The M1 is a new collaborative project between Russell Webster (Shining Bird, Ernest

Ellis Band) and Jay Bird (Jack Ladder Band, Tropical Strength), that started early in

2020 in their shared suburb of Austinmer in the Northern Illawarra. Drawing from

influences like Brian Eno, John Carpenter and The Cure’s Disintegration, The M1 delve

into a world of moody, synth and beat-driven music.

Throughout 2019 - 2021 The M1 was involved in writing and recording music for a range

of different short films and projects. During that period a lot of music was left on the

cutting room floor, so in August of 2021 The M1 compiled all of this material and released

their first full length album called Alternate Routes.

Alternate Routes presents a mix of ambient instrumental themes and cinematic tracks

that ebb and flow into each other. Mixed and mastered by the group, Alternate Routes

plays like a travel journal on a dark empty highway in the deepest rural areas of

Australia’s heartland.

Drawing on the band’s influences from Australia’s Ozploitation film movement of the 70s

and 80s, Alternate Routes paints the soundscape of a forgotten Sci-Fi Horror B movie

from your childhood.

“We wanted to capture the feeling of a continuous film score from start to finish.

Delivering a wide scope of musical themes while also joining all of the tracks together

seamlessly” Jay Bird said of the recording process.

Alternate Routes is available now across all streaming platforms.

Tired Girl

Dharawal/ Austinmer based electronic/pop artist Tired Girl is celebrating the release of her first EP - Internal -  Releasing on August 26th via Blossom Rot Records.

Internal is a collection of 6 songs (or 7 if you buy the tape with a secret track), pairing rhythms of dance music to emotive chords and melodies.

Each song leans into Liz Tillman’s intuitive, accidental and impulsive songwriting process and as a result, is primarily emotion-driven and aims

to revel in the vulnerability of human experience, from all sides, particularly the ones we usually try to hide.

Expect an up close and personal solo performance, layering washes of harmonies to create vastness, depth, and rhythm.

Liz is intrigued by the versatility of the voice and experiments with vocals as percussion and instrumentation.

The mood will take you through light and ethereal songs adorned with smooth glossy sparkly synths

and piano, alongside gritty, dark, repetitive, drums, basslines, and textures to create contrast and intensity.
