Go Carbon Neutral
Sydney WorldPride will welcome people from around the world to Australian shores. Unfortunately, flying to and from Sydney causes substantial greenhouse gas emissions. Thankfully, you can help us to deliver an environmentally responsible festival by offsetting your carbon emissions.
Offsetting your emissions means you're supporting accredited projects that offset your carbon footprint and make a positive impact on our beautiful planet.
Sydney WorldPride's Carbon Neutral Program is not-for-profit - Check the Sydney WorldPride website for updates on how your contribution goes directly to environmental projects across Australia and the world.
FAQs
What are carbon emissions?
Since the start of the industrial revolution, human activities (such as burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas and deforestation) have significantly increased the concentration of greenhouse gases - particularly carbon dioxide - in our atmosphere, causing extra heat to be trapped and global temperatures to rise. We’re now at a crisis point and are looking at every available option to reduce our impact on the planet.
What is carbon offsetting?
Carbon offsetting compensates for emissions released into the atmosphere from a particular activity (such as flying or running an event) through purchasing carbon credits. Carbon credits are generated by projects that reduce, remove or capture emissions from the atmosphere such as reforestation, renewable energy or energy efficiency.
Simply put - if you take a flight that creates emissions equal one tonne of CO2, you can make your journey “carbon neutral” by purchasing one tonne of carbon from an accredited project that has removed one tonne of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Carbon projects not only have a positive environmental impact by removing carbon from the atmosphere, but also deliver social, cultural and economic benefits too. These benefits can help enhance biodiversity, protect habitats, create employment, help people to live and work on-country, improve health and education, and provide access to clean and affordable energy.
How do you know the offset is really happening?
An independent review process of our preferred carbon credit projects is conducted by carbon experts to ensure project integrity prior to purchase. After the carbon credits are purchased from an accredited project, they are then retired from their registry. We will provide carbon credit serial numbers and tonnage surrendered in our post-event reporting.
How are flight emissions calculated?
Emissions per flight have been supplied by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Due to the large number of possible destinations of our WorldPride attendees, we have created geographical groups based on proximity to and from Sydney, Australia.
How are the Human Rights Conference emissions calculated?
We calculate the total emissions of the Human Rights Conference by identifying all relevant carbon emissions sources. This may include emissions from catering, waste, electricity, water usage, accommodation and travel. For each emissions source, we then apply a metric to the activity (for example, KwH/day to electricity usage) to calculate the total emissions of the Human Rights Conference.
Does Sydney WorldPride profit from carbon offsetting?
No. 100% of carbon offset funds collected will be used to purchase carbon credits to offset the impact from the event.
Will I be charged transaction fees for purchasing carbon offsets?
No. You will not be charged a transaction fee for purchasing carbon offsets.
