Monica Trapaga + The Pocket Trio with special support by Tessie Overmyer Trio

Monica Trapaga is a consummate performer. Her warm and witty approach has been instrumental in her success as a jazz singer and entertainer, where she has featured at major festivals across the world.

Born in Sydney to a Basque-Chinese father, and a Catalan-American mother, Monica was the youngest of the Trapaga brood, who had relocated to Australia from Manila prior to Monica’s arrival.

She has described her "fairly crazy Latin family” as instrumental in her developing her musical tastes. Growing up, she was surrounded by music, hearing everything from jazz and Latin to opera and classical music. Monica cites her father, who had an interest in jazz, and particularly Afro-Cuban jazz, as an influence as she went on to explore a range of contemporary styles performing with jazz, pop and big bands.

Monica rose to fame in the 90’s with her popular outfit Monica and the Moochers, also working as an actor on Australian TV, and as a long-time host of ABC’s Playschool. She won an APRA Award for her work with children’s album Tiger. She has written and co-written two books and is the current presenter of The Dinner Set on ABC Jazz.

A born entertainer, this veteran performer has covered a plethora of musical styles and settings, from lounge to swing and Afro-Cuban big band, delighting audiences. Her latest venture featuring this high-energy classic piano trio, evokes feel good jazz with tight arrangements and groovy pockets. Seating is strictly limited, book now.

Monica Trapaga (vocals) Andrew Scott (piano) Max Alduca (bass) Tim Geldens (drums)

Special Support: Tessie Overmyer Trio

One of the most exciting alto players to emerge recently, saxophonist Tessie Overmyer brings a soulful, late-night feel to her approach. Smouldering horn lines turn through charming arrangements, free of pretence. A traditional sense of musicianship and strong sense of melody permeates Overmyer’s compositions, with a maturity to her playing and phrasing that belies her youth.

At just 19 years old, Tessie earned a spot playing at the famous Newport Jazz Festival (2018), and we’re thrilled to see her make a splash alongside veteran performers at this years’ Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival!

Please note: Seating at Mary’s Underground is UNRESERVED. Groups intending to sit together are encouraged to arrive together. The venue can accommodate groups of up to 10 and Mary’s hosts will manage group arrivals on a first come, first serve basis.
