Australia’s own RnB Soul artist, Prinnie Stevens, has wowed audiences at the Adelaide Fringe Festival with the world premier of Lady Sings the Blues. A thoughtful cabaret, telling a story of empowerment through the stories and songs of women. And the show is coming home to Sydney.
Prinnie wrote and produced the show, and its debut performance at Adelaide Fringe 2021 for four nights only at the Queens theatre is set to be quite the intimate event.
“I have created a vintage feel with a modern twist. Think Great Gatsby meets Michael Jackson (smoothe criminal) vibes with the essence of Etta James blues & Beyonce’s Soul Pop… Not only inspired musically by also through fashion. The elegant use of gowns and even the significance of the gardenias use in Billie’s Holidays story.”
Lady Sings the Blues is a raw account of female hurt, struggles and pain, transporting crowds from a speakeasy setting to the very heart of Prinnie herself.
Prinnie says being intensely involved in the create process of the one-hour show was an intense and moving experience.
“This show will take you deep into the stories and songs of the women who sang them. How their struggles and pains have paved the way for each singer succedding them. From the 20s to the present day. “
Her musical theatre, TV and stage backgrounds all came together in creating the return to her first love of cabaret.
Prinnie has shared the stage with prominent women of colour across the globe for more than two decades. The likes of Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle and Mary J Blige in the United States and Australian Women like Jessica Mauboy, Christine Anu and Marcia Hines.
Participating on season one of The Voice Australia has led to a successful career in theatre which continues alongside shows from Prinnie Stevens Productions.
