Adrifting was first staged in a small theatre in Kew, just before Covid hit. We were trying to gauge what audiences thought of it before taking it further. And it was a hit with both women and men! However, during the run, and doing well, our tech kept talking about this virus in Wuhan and well we all know the rest. Hence our fabulous Adrifting was left adrift.
What we also did was get the script to Amanda Muggleton, who we felt was perfect for the character of the Mother who starts the great revolution. To our surprise and delight she got back within hours madly in love with it.
Now that things are calming down Amanda is joining us to do a reading of the play in an effort to attract some interest as we prepare to stage it on a larger scale.
On the surface the play is a drama/ comedy about four women, three of them facing the fact that the promised great Australian dream is out of their reach, the fourth one, the mother is here to show them that on the other side of the ruins, lies other dreams, perhaps even more fulfilling ones.
The play is easy to stage and tour, full of laughs and poignant moments, and written by Michael Gray Griffith, a playwright who is quickly making a reputation for himself as a maverick writer.
In October, Bruce Beresford will be directing one of his plays.
Michael and Rohana Hayes set up the Wolves Theatre company four years ago, their goals,
- to make a living from new theatre,
-and to show that mature creatives can be original, pertinent and marketable.
All their plays are aimed at the forty-five plus demographic, and while they do have younger people in them the focus of the plays is the older characters.
