Jazz it up!

Alistair Johnston Quartet -  Alistair Johnston is an emerging Sydney (Eora) based tenor saxophonist, improviser and composer. The last few years have been primarily focussed on playing and writing in his co-led Quintet 'Anoesis'. ‘Anoesis’ released their debut album “The Hermit” and toured to Romania, placing second at the Bucharest International jazz competition. In 2021 ‘Anoesis’ received the Fine Music “Ken Wheatherley Scholarship'' and will be recording their second album in 2022.

The “Alistair Johnston Quartet”, is his first self-titled project, featuring Trumpeter Miles Rooney, Bassist Harry Birch and drummer Ryu Kodama. The “Alistair Johnston Quartet” seeks to explore the compositional and improvisational possibilities when removing chordal accompaniment, embracing the increased freedoms and responsibilities within this format. Johnston looks to find his own voice within this chord-less format. He draws inspiration from The Mark Turner Quartet, Ornette Coleman’s bands of the 1960’s, Miles Davis’ second great quartet, as well as Australian bands The Sandy Evans Trio and Mark Simmonds and the Freeboppers. The compositions penned by Johnston strike a balance between form & freedom, complexity & simplicity and space & density.

Another Green World is a Sydney based duo led by Pianist, Lauren Tsamouras and features Harry Birch on double bass. The music is written to challenge the role of each instrument in a drum free setting. Another Green World navigates pulsatile, ostinato based compositions where the improvisation is informed by the architecture of each piece.
