After a lengthy hiatus (lets just call it a pandemic), acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Jordie Lane returns with the announcement that he will release, The Empty House Tapes Vol. 1, on September 15th, 2022 via Blood Thinner Records, along with select tour dates in major and regional cities.
It is the first in a series of Solo Acoustic EPs made up of spontaneous prose style Folk songs, written and recorded in the moment in a vacant house in Nashville, Tennessee, then mastered on reel to reel tape.
It's an old school, throwback storyteller set, telling tales of wild times on the road, Nostalgia for home, and observations of the intense past few years, with social, political and civil unrest in America while Jordie was there amongst it.
Lane's own experiences, in last leaving Australia at the height of the 2019-20 bushfires, to then witnessing his Nashville neighbourhood being hit by an EF3 Tornado, then hit with the ongoing Pandemic completely crippling the 'touring life’ for over two years, all led to a serendipitous conversation with a local landlord in Nashville who set Lane up in an old vacant empty house, where he wrote and recorded almost 50 songs over a month long stay.
13 of the songs went on to be recorded on a full length studio band album slated for release in early 2023. The remaining b-sides deserved a home outside the old dusty house too, and so, The Empty House Tapes concept was born. Volume 1 comprises the first set of 5 to be released worldwide, September 15, 2022.
Jordie explains the psychological benefits of the process;
'When a house is empty, dusty, echoey, and lonesome. When I don't live there, when it's not stuffed with all my physical and emotional baggage...That's where I discovered there's infinite space and energy that comes flooding through the walls and into my hands and mind and voice. I found a way to freely express and understand not only my story, but otherworldly ideas that came seeping through the old floorboards too. This may also be attributed to the delirious state I found myself in, as the Old house had no air conditioning or running water, and it was the middle of hot steamy Nashville summer'
This will be the first set of brand new songs released by Jordie Lane since his ‘Lost’ EP in 2019, which featured legendary American drummer Jim Keltner (Joe Cocker, John Lennon, Bob Dylan) and saw his track, ‘The Walls’ receive regular rotation airplay on Australia’s Double J network, along with love from editorial playlists on Spotify and Amazon.
Known for his creative applications of makeshift spaces to create stunning records, such as his groundbreaking 2011 album, Blood Thinner, made in a desert motel in Joshua Tree, California with little more than a Cassette recorder, to his critically acclaimed Glassellland, which was also self recorded in a series of Air Bnb’s across Los Angeles, it only seems fitting that Jordie has found himself again being led by the experience to set the tone and vibe and become the essence of what sets Lane apart from many of his Folk/Americana counterparts.
