Kiama native Joe Mungovan is set to release his new single ‘You + Me’ on the 17^th September. The guitar driven indie/rock track is the first single from Mungovan in 2020, and it adds a new shade to his expansive sonic pallet.  

“I started writing this song back in 2017.  I came up with the chord progression along with the recurring guitar motif and then sat on it for a while. About a year later I wrote the rest of the song around those initial ideas, but when it came to recording the song I couldn’t seem to find the right vibe for it, so I let it stew for a little while longer. Fast forward to last year on tour in Europe, I was playing around with the song while visiting the beautiful Greek islands.  I tried playing it a little more laid back with an off-beat sort of rhythm through the chorus and it all seemed to fall together and make sense.”

‘You + Me’ was recorded at multiple home studio set ups that Mungovan has been working out of over the past 3 years, and the final touches were added at Sydney studio One Flight Up with producer Tim Carr (Matt Corby, Urthboy).  The track displays a more roots/rock vibe to previous tracks from Mungovan, and will have you feeling like you’re sailing over a still lake on a perfect Sunday afternoon.

After crashing his skateboard at the age of 13 Mungovan was left wheelchair-bound and unable to play his drumkit for 4 months. In that time Joe taught himself guitar and unconsciously developed a style that blends indie, roots and pop together to produce his unique sound.

Last year saw Mungovan tour around Germany, France and Spain in support of his single ‘Lost Myself’.  The track received airplay on both Triple J and Triple J Unearthed radio stations.  Pilerats comments, “a long-winding indie-rock epic that swells and grows as it continues, transforming from a soft, acoustic guitar melody to something more powerful and impactful in its latter moments.”
