MIJF Congress Presents
JK GROUP
& TAMIL ROGEON'S 'Son of Nyx'
Due to circumstances beyond our and the artists’ control, 30/70 will not be appearing as planned on Friday night. Tamil Rogeon will instead be joined in this exciting double bill by the JK Group, a powerhouse nu-jazz band that sits at the crossover of raw, live jazz and electronic/dance production.
Spearheaded by 2019 PBS Young Elder of Jazz, saxophonist Josh Kelly, and riding high on their Music Victoria Awards nominated 2020 debut release – The Young Ones – the JK Group sees Kelly in full flight alongside his 30/70 collaborators Matt Hayes (bass) and Lucky Pereira (drums). Their follow up EP, What’s Real?, released in October has cemented their place in Melbourne’s world renowned jazz scene and earned the praise of local and international DJs, critics and fans.
The JK Group regularly welcomes a rotating line-up of Melbourne’s most respected musicians to join them on stage. In this iteration for MIJF, this already stellar group of musicians will be bolstered by multi-award-winning flutist, composer and producer Erica Tucceri (WVR BVBY, Z*F*E*X), rising star Kade Brown (keys) and the brilliant Javier Fredes (congas/hand percussion).
Melbourne is recognised around the world as the epicentre for a vital, creative community of musicians who produce a truly unique style of jazz that draws on influences ranging from neo-soul to retro sci-fi. This incredible Festival double bill brings together two ground-breaking acts at the forefront of this new sound in Australian jazz.
30/70 is a collective of Melbourne-based musicians devoted to truth through sound and the beauty of endless motion. From swirling opening pads to sax-laden shimmers, the group effortlessly shift between neo-soul, astral-facing future jazz, and authentic vignettes of UK club music history.
Joining them on this double bill of new jazz excellence, is viola-jazz pioneer Tamil Rogeon (The Raah Project), showcasing tunes from his critically acclaimed recent release, 'Son of Nyx'. His swirling prism of exploratory modal jazz, Afro-latin percussion and string-led composition is heavily inspired by the spiritual jazz and jazz fusion movements of the 60s and 70s.
