All the albums have received excellent reviews. Here’s what some critics have had to say:

“Clever songs, quirky arrangements, Carr’s genius is to is to meld diverse elements into something quite unique.” – Rhythms Magazine (2020)

“[Free Right Now] brought a real smile to my face and made my morning as I put this on repeat. The way this song saunters along is fantastic. Rhythmically so exciting and fun the whole thing comes together so masterfully. Bravo!” – 4.5 stars. – Nkechi Anele, Triple J’s Roots ‘n’ All (2019)

Flight Cycleis Jimmi’s new album. It’s the most wide-ranging and musically and sonically adventurous work of his career. It was conceived and composed as part of Jimmi’s PhD. That project, which also includes a thesis, is titled “Genre Collisions, Culture Collisions: Identifying and Understanding Different Types of Cross-Cultural Influence in Music.” The study focuses on, among other things, cross-cultural fusions in music between Anglo-American popular music and popular and traditional music South Africa and West Africa. The music onFlight Cyclealso follows this theme. It is influenced by artists including Fela Kuti and Paul Simon and genres including hip-hop, prog-rock, EDM and various styles from Southern and Western Africa.

Due to the nature of the project, Jimmi didn’t feel bound by pop music conventions, although many of the songs have a strong pop sensibility. Flight Cycle is the sound of an artist pushing their own boundaries.

Jimmi will be performing tracks from the new album as well as the best of his back catalogue with a new line-up of his band at Lazybones on March 4.
