Event Details

Held monthly, In The Round at The Vanguard is inspired by the sessions at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, among many others, where four singer/songwriters get together to play their own songs, each others, maybe some covers - and tell a few stories along the way. Expect a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with an incredible evening of music across two sets.

The event takes place with the artists taking the stage, guests are invited to ask questions of the songwriters. If you have ever wanted to know how that song was written, now is your chance!

The 26th instalment of In The Round at The Vanguard will feature Lady Lyon, Matt Dewar, Field Of Wolves and Rees Lucia.

LADY LYON

Based in Sydney, Lady Lyon has been making a name for herself on the local folk scene for the last 6 years, watching, waiting, writing, whittling away her memories and experiences into songs that truly express who she is with what she has to say.
Her debut EP “Champion Blues” delves into the last 10 years of her life with songs like “The Captains Wife” derived from living in near isolation for three months in rural France working for a family with incredibly complex dynamics, “Champion Blues” a song about learning to live and forgive yourself of your mistakes and most recent “A Little More”, to find enough courage to change, despite fear. Her unique playing style lends itself serenely to a pawn shop Ibanez with a few modifications and she takes pride in her honest brand of take me as you hear me songwriting then heads into the studio to record the next single "Surf's Up".

MATT DEWAR (A STAR PILOT FROM SATURN)

The loneliest star pilot in the galaxy is kissed by a comets tail”
Often likened to artists such as Father John Misty and Beach House – Matthew Dewar aka A Star Pilot from Saturn is a retro/luminescent return for the artist FKA DIREWOLF.
"His sets are love-struck dirges, charting characters as they struggle through the absurd perils and splendid crescendos of life, he also has rather expressive feet, tracing quick hieroglyphics on the ground as he plays.” – The Brag
A severely tumultuous but profoundly defining past two years has seen Dewar create a full body of work set to be released this year, all written/recorded in Matt's bedroom. A Star Pilot from Saturn is no alter ego, rather Matt's artistic manifestation of male sensitivity, optimism, communication and happiness. Abundantly clear are Star Pilot's themes and lyrics which are heavily influenced by men's mental health. The hugely anticipated 3rd single "RED" addresses that very struggle taken straight from personal experience.
“Electrifyingly haunting vocals” “Some pretty gnarly lyrics”- The Music Producer

FIELD OF WOLVES

Field Of Wolves emerged in 2013 from a warehouse in North London by Sydney born singer and guitarist, Holly Bestic. London was the beginning of a journey of assorted influences, many absorbed, some abandoned – now an amalgam of styles underpinned by Bestic’s effortless vocals and master song-writing.
In March 2019 EP "We Felt This Once" was released on a stormy deluged eve, they survived gumboots intact.
"Cruisy, woozy, soulful deliciousness" - FBI Radio

REES LUCIA

Rees Lucia brought her otherworldly sound to the Sydney music scene with her debut release ‘In/Congruence’. Recorded with Mark Myers of The Middle East, the EP moved effortlessly between dark and light, pulling the listener into blissfully lush songs of nostalgia and happiness with its poetic lyricism and elaborate harmonies. Incorporating the diverse genres of melodic folk, dreamy pop and alternative rock, her lilting vocals and floating guitar lines melted you into the sound.
Following on from her debut EP, Rees Lucia released her latest single, ‘Moving Arms’ recording with Ryan K Brennan (Phantastic Ferniture). The song is a mesmerising tribute to dizzy feelings of euphoria and paranoia, exploring the push/pull of highs and lows in relationships and how even the most strong-willed people in our lives are not immune to struggles with mental health. ‘Moving Arms’ will get stuck in your mind for days with its hypnotic groove and floating harmonies.
