Event Details

Held monthly, In The Round at The Vanguard is inspired by the sessions at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, among many others, where four singer/songwriters get together to play their own songs, each others, maybe some covers - and tell a few stories along the way. Expect a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with an incredible evening of music across two sets.

The event takes place with a unique set up; artists taking the stage on the floor of the venue, with guests invited to sit around the songwriters as they perform - just like they do at the Bluebird in Nashville!

The 23rd instalment of In The Round at The Vanguard will feature the night's curators Lisa Caruso, Georgia Mulligan, Dominic Breen and Skinny Legions (Solo).

LISA CARUSO

Lisa Caruso is known for her utterly unique vocal and distinct style of delivery. Unafraid to tell it like it is, Lisa has gone from strength to strength as an Artist and Musician.
Songs from forthcoming debut album ‘In Feelings’, produced by guitarist Benjamin Fletcher (Sarah Blasko, Marina and the Diamonds), are being performed by a well oiled band who are no strangers to playing live shows. Arrangements, holding nostalgia to 60’s and 90’s indie eras still remain current, are roaring, sensitive, and tend to the impassioned and relatable writers songs that are becoming a soundboard to many. The raucous attitude of ’A Holiday’ followed ’Shake Baby Shake’, a song about invisible illness, which earned its way onto popular American NBC series ‘Good Girls’. Then came the brooding and impassioned track, ‘Borrow My Body’.
‘Dream Lover’ is single number four, it holds the fire, unleashing in opportune moments and falling aptly apart in others. Demonstrating a lovers persistent cry, empowering and unrelenting, there is a force behind Lisa’s vulnerability that is absolute in each story she chooses to express. Little wonder that Lisa recently named as a finalist in the ‘Emerging Artist’ category at The 2019 Australian Women in Music Awards!

GEORGIA MULLIGAN

Since the release of her 2016 debut EP "Our Blood to Part", Georgia has been honing her writing and performance skills having appeared at Fairgrounds Festival, St Kilda Festival and BIGSOUND 2018. In 2019, she joined Julia Jacklin's "Crushing" World Tour as a member of her backing band as well as performing solo in support of Jacklin's sold-out run of dates in the UK and Ireland.
Her second EP "Mirror" is a collection of highly personal songs written and recorded across 2017/2018 in collaboration with friend and producer Ryan K. Brennan, released on September 19th 2019.
With a startlingly nuanced voice that is at once commanding and tender, Georgia Mulligan's songs peel away at an emotional core that often goes unexamined. Though there is a degree of vulnerability to these songs, ultimately they are folk anthems of resistance - powerfully sung tales of the kind of everyday tragedy audience members understand innately.

DOMINIC BREEN

Dominic Breen writes compulsively. Often finding that words and melodies arrive in his head fully formed, the young Sydney musician has no control over his creative urges and would be unable to stop writing songs if he tried. As a teenager, Dom suffered a number of serious concussions and ultimately severe head trauma. Bizarrely, these injuries unlocked something within him and his writing flourished. Songs and poems began to flow out of Dom at a rapid clip with the critically acclaimed video and debut EP "Lay Low". They haven’t stopped since, the resulting new EP "Rattlin'" with the achingly evocative "Ashfield" and "Dream Thing" show the Sydney multi-instrumentalist has been swiftly amassing a reputation as one of the most endearing songwriters emerging onto the scene.

SKINNY LEGIONS (SOLO)

Glenn Hopper is a musical experimenter with deep pop instincts and a spontaneous and poetic lyricism. The resultant Skinny Legions draws from a lineage of songwriters; from the 70’s greats (Bowie,  Drake,  Mitchell,  King, Young etc.), to millennial heroes such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart and Aldous Harding. The creative approach in the writing and performance of Skinny Legions was born of an adolescent flirtation with the beat poets, who’s vivid expressiveness, mundane profundity, and improvisatory liveliness are felt and heard each time Hopper takes the stage. An alt-folk rarity of the inner-west music scene, each performance of Skinny Legions will refresh the first-time and returning listener, with his debut album "Worlds, Worlds & Other Worlds" and latest single "Rollin'", stay tuned.
