Event Details

HRBRT are amongst the most exciting acts to emerge from Brisbane’s burgeoning jazz and improvisational music scene, having crafted a unique and futuristic blend of funk, fusion, neo-soul and electronic music. One of the few bands that can truly make odd meters groove & instrumental music sing, they have been described as “one of the musical gems of Brisbane and indeed Australia”. The project was brought back to life in 2018 after an extended hiatus, following their performance at Jungle Love Festival (2015). An evolution in sound & vision occurred when drummer & composer Nathan MacGregor connected with guitarist Brandon Mamata, who then joined MacGregor along with long-time collaborators Andrew Fincher (Keyboards), Lee Brackenborough (Synthesisers) & Lachlan “Swampdog” Symons (bass).

Local keyboardist/producer Rohan Seekers' solo project, Rohan the Intern, made a quiet but assertive debut on WYWS at the end of 2017 with "Blue", a 40-odd minute collection of dusty sample loops, drawing heavily from soul music and Brazilian sounds. The response to "Blue" and it's subsequent cassette release has seen Rohan featured on 4ZZZ Radio's live-to-air performance program Right Here, Right Now and Melbourne-based web series Ride With It, live performances in Melbourne and Brisbane, and an inaugural festival slot at Strawberry Fields. Rohan's contribution to GCR's Lo-fi Tape Series, "Bent Fenders", provides a snapshot of initial experiments incorporating vocals and live instrumentation into his production, spreading the net of sonic possibilities wider to include the keyboard and composition skills honed on numerous Brisbane stages, and to showcase key collaborators from the local hip-hop and soul music scenes.

Primarily recognisable as the frontman and rhythm guitarist of psychedelic-funk-rock outfit MACHINE MACHINE, few (or many) words can describe the musical dynamo that is Lyle. A self taught 'look-see-do' musician, Lyle is steadily cementing a name for himself within the Brisbane scene. With steady, confident hands gripping his guitar and a youthful yet deceivingly powerful voice, Lyle draws his inspiration from the most unlikely of places, citing Westlife, Adele, One Direction and Freddie Mercury as some of his major influences. From heart-wrenching ballads about pining for lost love, to jaunty tunes about staying hydrated - with a healthy dose of recognisable yet left-of-field covers in between - Versatility is the cornerstone of Lyle's musical savoir-faire.
