Event Details

Hot Potato Band, a group of wandering musicians from Sydney, best known for their antics and street shows, have just released their most exciting track yet.

With cafe culture in Australia at an all time high and the bands intense love for coffee, there is no wonder why it inspired their new song 'Ritual'.

HPB's sound has always been hard to describe, especially from song to song, however 'Ritual' bares similarities to the freedom choruses of Coldplay and the fierce brass of The Cat Empire. The musical idea of band leader Simon Ghali, 'Ritual' was an effort to demonstrate the energy and power behind the band and its instruments. "It was essentially written like an electronic pop or EDM song, but for an all acoustic brass band line up." Ghali says. "Lyrically the song is written about the need for coffee everyday. It romanticises coffee, to the point that living without it is nigh impossible... and yes, we are coffee snobs".

From their humble beginnings as roving performers, they have steadily paved their own way through todays music industry, so heavily dominated by electronic instrumentation. With vocalist Ben Goldstein, three drummers, an array of horns and even a sousaphone, the band is aiming to re-ignite the energy of acoustic instruments in Australia.

'Ritual' was recorded by Nathaniel Sjarif at Parliament Studios in Sydney's inner west suburb of Leichhardt and will be released on all music platforms on Thursday 25th October.

Extra Background on bands past releases...

The band's very first song 'This Is How It Should Be' was released in 2014 and is still one of their most popular songs, adopted by festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Caloundra Music Festival and New Zealand's Coastella Music Festival as their anthems from 2016 - 2018. Later followed the release of their debut album 'Paint The Town' with lead single 'Sail Away', with which the band spent most of 2017 touring Australia and New Zealand.
