HEKKA is a piano/bass/drums unit which explores song forms, loops, beats, & improvisations. The trio - consisting of Novak Manojlovic, Tully Ryan & Jacques Emery - collectively navigate melody & structure with a unique empathetic approach, moving through acoustic and electronic landscapes with a rare litheness and unity. While curiosity and exploration inform their aesthetic, the song remains pre-eminent. Beauty is clarity and communication is always key.

Since releasing their debut EP 'wrecker' in late 2018 and touring the east coast of Australia to much acclaim, HEKKA have become of the most unique ensembles in the country with their idiomatic and broad-minded take on the piano trio format. As a result they were the recipients of the esteemed Freedman Fellowship award in 2019. Here, in this special Mary's Underground performance, they will play their new record in its entirety, recorded in January 2021 and awaiting release later in the year.

BONNIESONGS

For a peck of audiences in Australia over the past couple of years, Bonnie Stewart (Ireland) has been one of those subtly transcendent artists. Her lilting vocals float over gentle peaks of acoustic and electronic instruments, layered ethereally into what may be a moderately enchanted loop pedal. Under the spell of thrumming guitar, Stewart renders her arrangements with a fidelity of performance that seems to amplify an almost spectral presence. This is Bonniesongs. She’ll play loudly whilst making you ridiculously aware of silence and then go some way to reminding you how music is at its most basic, mere vibration moving through air, occupying the same molecular space as the incorporeal.
