Winner Best Spoken Word at Sydney Fringe 2019 and featured in All About Women 2020 at the Sydney Opera House, Generation Women celebrates and amplifies women’s voices and creativity. Each month, six women of note read an original piece on a theme. Of those women, one is in her 20s, her 30s, her 40s, her 50s, her 60s, and her 70s+. Our diverse line-ups will make you laugh, cry, and think. Generation Women is a unique, intimate storytelling night that brings together women of all ages. 

Theme- Far From Home 

Adventurous women roam. This month’s theme invites our storytellers to recall a time they were far from home. This might be literal distance from home base — an overseas vacation, year abroad, the experience of moving for college or their first job. Or this might be a metaphorical distance — getting far from the person they really are, losing sight of their values and sense of self. Maybe they’ll dive deep or maybe they’ll just make us laugh. Whatever they choose to share, humorous or heartfelt, we know it’s going to inspire and delight.

Team 20s: Tess Birch is the first ever lawyer to become a comedian. She is a regular storyteller at the Moth and has performed stand up comedy at the Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festivals, having recently performed in the ‘Breast of the Fest.’ Her comedy has been described as ‘taking delightfully unexpected twists and turns’ by Beat Magazine.

Team 30s: Cecilia Rozario has lived her life instinctively by following her passions. Beginning her career in music and touring, before transitioning to public, environmental health and occupational and industrial hygiene, while also facilitating yoga and mediation sessions. Her love of travel has seen her visit 35 countries and her drive and endurance and allowed her to complete her first ultra-marathon.

Team 40s: Jen Buchanan. Over the past two and a half decades, Jen has lived, worked and travelled to over fifty different countries. Jen is a future focused educator with a vision to make schools better and is deeply committed to creating a greater sense of equity for all.

Team 50s: Karen Garton is passionate about the power of storytelling to make meaning of our lived experiences and to find healing in sharing stories before a live audience.She began telling stories on the Story Wise Women stage in 2018 and became a member of the Story Wise Women administration team in 2021.Karen has also been a Moth StorySLAM winner and Moth GrandSLAM participant.

Team 60s: Julie Edwards, CEO of Jesuit Social Services, has over 40 years’ experience engaging with marginalised people and families experiencing breakdown and trauma. A social worker, family therapist and grief and loss counsellor, Julie has a PhD in organisational identity and serves on a number of committees promoting social and ecological justice.

Team 70s: Barb Creed is Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Melbourne. She is the author of six books on feminist film theory, gender & human/animal studies. She has been on the boards of Writers Week, the Melbourne Queer Film Festival & the VCA School of Film and Television. She has directed several documentaries and been a film critic for The Age and ABC radio national.
