Event Details

She is Australia’s rising star of jazz and blues and her sophisticated mix of swing and ballads has been enchanting audiences around the country. Following up two previous sell-out performances here at The Basement, we’re thrilled to have the talented Frances Madden back with her Jazz, Blues & Classics show.

Described by ABC Jazz's Mal Stanley as a talented young vocalist and pianist and 'one to watch', Frances is one of the classiest young entertainers Australia has produced in recent times. While she's been compared to Diana Krall and Norah jones, Frances captivates her audiences with a combination of her genuinely warm stage presence together with a voice and style that is uniquely her own. She is also a talented and engaging original composer so when she performs her own swinging tunes, smokey blues and beautiful ballads, they merge seamlessly with the timeless classics she reinterprets.

As jazz legend James Morrison put it: "Frances has a wonderful feeling for jazz and blues standards but what makes her a real stand-out are her original songs and unique style". Matt Bailey from Sydney's Fine Music 102.5 FM said "Frances' music is a river of original and heartfelt material, a truly creative force not just in the jazz idiom but also as a genuine contemporary songwriter."

Frances will perform at The Basement as part of her eight piece band. As well as Frances on vocals and piano, the line-up for the show features acclaimed Sydney saxophone player Jason Bruer alongside some of Australia's most talented jazz musicians.

Frances says "We have a wonderful show planned for The Basement. We'll be playing some original swing and blues as well as our unique take on some timeless classics. We'll also be doing some ballads, some bossa and some Bacharach for you. We'll be 'road testing' some great new material for our next album. There will be something for everyone, so bring along some friends for dinner and we promise to make it an evening that you'll enjoy."

Frances' debut album If This Were a Dream went to #5 on the ARIA jazz charts, establishing her as a fresh new presence in the Australian adult contemporary music scene. She is an active supporter of charities and her 2016 commitments include Tour de Cure along with Shine at the House (UN Autism Awareness Day at Sydney Opera house).
