Event Details

Dance classes inspired by routines from iconic music video clips held inside a legendary band room // Kids 10-15 5.00pm // Adults 16+ 6.30pm

Familiar moves made easy for everyone from beginners and beyond, in an inclusive and judgement free environment.

TEACHERS

James Welbsy

James Welsby is a producer, choreographer and performer with a decade of professional experience in contemporary dance and queer performance. He graduated from the VCA School of Dance in 2007 and in 2008 founded Phantom Limbs (winner "Best Dance" Melbourne Fringe 2013 and "Melbourne Festival Discovery Award"). He has performed for numerous companies (Taylor Mac, Finucane and Smith, BRIEFS,) and independent choreographers (Martin Del Amo, Luke George, and Cadi McCarthy). James is the founder and artistic director of critically acclaimed cult cabaret YUMMY, which has been presented in multiple festivals and continues to tour internationally. 

As a choreographer, James has created work for Club Swizzle, Sisters Grimm, Zoe Coombs Marr, and Lucy Guerin Inc (Pieces for Small Spaces), and has created several full-length shows under his own name. One of which, "HEX," was performed in Next Wave Festival 2014, the International AIDS Conference 2014, and toured Australia in 2015 to Brisbane Powerhouse, PICA, RCC, PACT, and The Street Theatre. James taught at Chunky Move for six years, and was mentored by choreographer Stephanie Lake through JUMP mentoring. His drag alter ego "Valerie Hex" has been seen touring nationally and internationally and has performed in countless nightclubs around the world.


Chafia Brooks

Chafia is a dance and movement facilitator and the creator of 'Pop Icon' dance classes. She began her love of dance as a member of the highly regarded QL2 Youth Dance Company, Canberra before completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) at the Queensland University of Technology.
Chafia has over 10 years professional experience working in the dance industry as a performer, choreographer and teacher. As a contemporary dancer she has been involved in many projects for theatre, arts and music festivals, dance film and site specific work both nationally and Internationally. She also has extensive experience working across more commercial projects in film and TV and has been involved in music film clips for artists including; Darren Hayes, Little Birdy, The Sleepy Jackson, The Living End, Youth Group, Powderfinger, Ben Lee, Skipping Girl Vinegar, Kid Radio, TZU, Alex Watts and Le1f (USA).

In more recent years Chafia has become focused on the multiple benefits and relevance of dance within the broader community across all demographics, abilities and professions. Further study in Dance Movement Therapy has allowed her to bring movement experiences and education to a widely diverse range of people. Chafia will be expanding her classes, private sessions and mindful  movement workshops in 2019 as the director of 'Curious Mover - Dance and Movement for Wellbeing'.

Kids 10-15: 5.00pm - 6.00pm

Adults 16+: 6.30pm - 7.30pm

Please arrive 5-10 mins prior to your class time. Under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who remains in the Gershwin Room for the entirety of the class.
