Dan Barnett Big Band

The legendary Dan Barnett Big Band return for one night only at the iconic Mary’s Underground venue, formerly known as The Basement, swinging through classic standards and originals, led by Dan’s classic trombone and powerful vocals.

Dan Barnett is a longstanding veteran of live performance, with credits including James Morrison, INXS, Jack Johnson, and The Australian Art Orchestra. Barnett has made international appearances at Montreaux Jazz Festival, Jazz Ascona, Bulach, Lenk Jazz in Switzerland, and Roskilde and Silkebourg Riverboat Jazz in Denmark to name but a few.

This lineup play selections from four studio albums, and dip their toe into swing, boogaloo, Latin, funk, and all the juicy bits in between. For their SIMA appearance, Australia’s leading big band exponent will explode onto the stage with fourteen members doing what they do best - making audiences move while laying down volume and power.

With household names like Dickeson, James Greening, Locke, David Theak, Robertson and Cassar in the lineup, audiences should expect to be blown away with incredible arrangements, ensemble playing and great solos.

The programme highlights some of Australia’s finest arrangers and composers, as well as Dan’s original compositions.

Carl Dewhurst/Matt McMahon/Lisa Parrott

Pianist Matt McMahon and guitarist Carl Dewhurst have joined forces with saxophonist Lisa Parrott to launch an exciting new trio!

Carl is a leading figure in the Australian jazz and improvised music scene, and has reputation for a wild youth spent infatuated with rock. Those noisy influences still bubble to the surface, given half a chance.

Matt McMahon was the Wangaratta National Jazz Piano Award recipient for 1999, the winner of the Freedman Jazz Fellowship in 2005, and has firmly established his place in Australian Jazz.

Lisa Parrott collaborated with Dewhurst in the legendary free jazz quartet NUDE, and will return home from New York to join the duo. Parrott brings her adroit manoeuvres on saxophone that astound and delight the listener.

With three legendary Australian musicians in the same room, a shared feeling of magic and expectation fills the air.

“They are like two poets finding the confines of the sonnet form a catalyst for creativity” – John Shand.
