CONVERSATIONS WITH MEN is an exploration of masculinity, vulnerability and the tender connection between men and their childhood selves moderated by writer, broadcaster and feminist community builder CLEMENTINE FORD. CWM invites five men to speak to the boys they used to be about the men they learned to become. In this intimate space and through the generosity of these performers, CWM also invites audience members to reflect on how society informs and shapes masculinity in the minds of some of our littlest humans.

PETE HELLIAR has been one of Australia’s favourite comedians since his first appearance on our TV screens as a core cast member on the Logie Award winning Rove back in 1999. Pete has performed stand up for more than twenty years, selling out shows right across the country, where he makes the difficult business of being funny look dead easy.

Now the Gold Logie Nominee is making people laugh four nights a week on Network Ten’s The Project, the beloved show where the news is delivered differently.

A man of many talents, Peter created and co-produced two series of the award winning It’s A Date for ABC TV, and How to Stay Married for Network Ten which premiered in 2018 and is now currently filming its third season. He has directed episodes of both shows.

He is also the author of the much loved children’s book series, Frankie Fish which is published by Hardie Grant/Egmont. In 2018, Frankie Fish was voted one of Australia’s Top 50 kids books in the annual Better Reading Top 50 Kids Books poll and Frankie Fish and the Sonic Suitcase was shortlisted for the ABIAs for Book of the Year for Younger Children in 2018. Pete’s new children’s book Trippin’ With Kids, co-authored with his wife Bridget Helliar, was released in 2020.

IAN HAMM A Yorta Yorta man, Ian Hamm has over 30 years of extensive government and community sector experience, particularly at executive and governance levels. Ian has overseen major policy and strategic reforms for government and community organisations, especially in Aboriginal matters.  He is now the chair and board member of a number of non-for-profit and public purpose organisations devoting himself to improving the representation of Aboriginal people on boards and other high level governance, through strategic action, advocacy and mentoring.

JONATHAN GREEN has been an editor, writer, commentator and broadcaster in a 40-year career as a journalist, beginning with a cadetship at The Canberra Times and taking in various Australian dailies: the Melbourne Herald, The Herald Sun, the Sunday Herald, The Sunday Age and 15 years at The Age. Jonathan left The Age in 2006 to edit Crikey. After three years there he moved to the ABC as founding editor of ABC Online’s The Drum. He now presents Blueprint for Living on ABC Radio National. He is the author of Around Australia In 80 Days (2004) and The Year My Politics Broke (2013). He has been editor of Meanjin since 2015.

KEVIN MITCHELL as the frontman for Jebediah and as his ARIA Award winning alter ego Bob Evans, has graced the Australian music scene for more than two decades and has written some of the country’s most beloved songs.   Under the alias of Bob Evans, Mitchell has released five studio albums, all of which showcase the versatility and skill of this talented songsmith. Gentle, acoustic melodies prevail, enveloping the classic folk storytelling and strong emotional pull that characterises Mitchell’s substantial body of work.

Following a short intermission, event moderator and creator CLEMENTINE FORD will host a 30 minute conversation with the performers on stage.

Brunswick Ballroom will be operating under the current Victorian State Government guidelines as we continue to live with this pandemic. 

The venue will be taking a number of precautionary measures to ensure patron safety, including:

 - Signage and social distancing markers throughout the venue
 - Regular sanitising of the venue and full clean between sittings

The Brunswick Ballroom also strives to improve our practices when it comes to sustainability and to reduce our carbon footprint. We don’t sell or provide plastic water bottles.
