As part of their world tour, ambient pop group Cigarettes After Sex have announced their first run of Australian shows in support of their critically acclaimed debut self-titled album. The band, who Noisey champion as "an overnight internet sensation, eight years in the making", will be playing headline shows in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne in the New Year.
Lead singer Greg Gonzalez had a clear vision for his band's debut album, a gorgeously cinematic work which features singles "Apocalypse", "K" and "Each Time You Fall In Love". The album unspools like the most achingly romantic of movies: immersive, cohesive and transporting. Swooning in the spirit of influences such as Mazzy Star and Red House Painters, its sumptuous songs of love elevate Cigarettes to the ranks of those acts who create worlds of their own, exciting the most devoted kind of following.
Since their formation, Cigarettes After Sex have become a word-of-mouth phenomenon, generating millions of views on YouTube for their exquisitely yearning, graceful dream-pop. The band's self-released debut single "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby" has now clocked up over 70 million streams, and was a soundtrack highlight in current TV favourite The Handmaid's Tale with Music Junkee commenting "Cigarettes After Sex is the musical find of the series and it's worth tracking down their self-titled album."
