Join us for the final Catastrophes event of 2021, where local writers find poetry in the ruins of our time. With readings by John Hawke, LK Holt, and Hayley Singer, and music from Zulya Kamalova. MC’d by Lucy Van.

John Hawke's Aurelia (Cordite), received the Anne Elder Award. His second book, Whirlwind Duststorm, is available from Grand Parade Poets.

LK Holt has written five collections of poetry. Birth Plan was shortlisted for the 2020 Prime Minister’s Award for Poetry and the 2020 Victorian Premier’s Award for Poetry. She is the recipient of the NSW Premier’s Award for Poetry and the Grace Leven Prize, and has been longlisted for the Australian Literature Society’s Gold Medal.

Hayley Singer lives on the unceded lands of the Bunurong people, in a place so small there’s only one road and it ends at a cliff. Her essays have appeared in The Lifted Brow, The Monthly, Cordite Poetry Review and Art + Australia. She is writing her first book.

Zulya Kamalova is originally from Tatarstan in central Russia. She has produced ten albums to date solo and with her band The Children of the Underground, including the ARIA-winning 3 Nights. Her music has been featured on compilations released by Putumayo (USA), BBC Radio (UK), and ABC Classic’, and has been described as "something that sits between Kurt Weill-ish Euro-Cabaret jazz and lullabies constructed to tear your heart out".

Lucy Van is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne working on a monograph called The Beginning of the Poem. Her spoken-word EP in collaboration with Laila Sakini, Figures, was released by Purely Physical (UK) in 2017, and her poetry collection, The Open, was published by Cordite Books.
