Through spoken word, poetry, music and conversation Cafe Philosophique aims to look deeply into the things that make us human and provide a space to question and dissect their roles in our lives.

A night in the Balcony Bar with the setting sun and sounds of artists in a series of performances, De L'amour. Ending with an open conversation where you are invited to share your thoughts and experiences while listening to those of others.

This is a series of Tuesday nights, individually ticketed, exploring the nature of relationships.

Where all relationships should stem from, but often easier said than done. 
How do we foster a healthy relationship with ourselves? 
What does a healthy relationship with ourself even look like?

Andy Jackson

Andy Jackson has featured as a poet and a performer at literary events and arts festivals in Ireland, India, the USA and Australia. His poems have been selected for five of the last six annual editions of The Best Australian Poems. Andy's most recent collection, Music our bodies can't hold (Hunter Publishers, 2017), consists of portrait poems of other people with Marfan Syndrome, and his new collection Human looking is forthcoming. He has worked in call-centres, libraries, and as a creative writing tutor, and has recently finished a PhD in poetry and bodily otherness through the University of Adelaide.

Manisha Anjali

Manisha Anjali is a Melbourne-based poet and artist. Her debut poetry collection, Sugar Kane Woman, is about the dreams and hallucinations of exiled Indo-Fijian women. Manisha has performed at Melbourne Writers Festival, Queensland Poetry Festival, Emerging Writers Festival and a number of curatorial projects in Australia and New Zealand. She has been a Writer in Residence at Incendium Radical Library and a Hot Desk Fellow at The Wheeler Centre. Manisha is the Poetry Editor at The Lifted Brow.

Sean M Whelan

Sean M Whelan is a poet, playwright, DJ and marriage celebrant. He has published two books of poetry, Love is the New Hate and Tattooing the Surface of the Moon. His first play Everything: All The Time enjoyed a sold out season at the 2013 Melbourne Fringe Festival. All The Animals We Ate his second play was performed at the 2105 Melbourne Fringe. He also works extensively with musicians, most notably Isnod and The Interim Lovers. He has performed his work widely both nationally and overseas in the USA, Canada, Indonesia and New Zealand. In 2014 he was awarded a Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria. He is currently working on a new collection of poetry and new recordings. He has recently launched his own podcast More Than a Whelan.

Ebony Moncrief

Ebony MonCrief, raised in Birmingham, Alabama, is a writer, performance poet, and educator within Melbourne's Youth Justice Centre. Through words, she explores art, music, humanity, the universe and most importantly self. Her vibrant storytelling style engages, entertains and provides audiences with a honest look at the person behind the words.

Matt Wicking (Musician)

As singer and songwriter with Melbourne band The General Assembly, Matt Wicking's songs blur and dissolve the lines between human and non-human nature. With song-writing that draws from the deep well of folk and blues storytelling, and a dynamic voice that soars and shifts - from a whisper to a howl, from soulful baritone to soaring falsetto - his music offers fresh ways of seeing old landscapes.
