A Love Supreme presents....
BLESS - Steven Julien aka Funkineven (UK Apron Records) 26.10.19
It’s been a minute Boomtown. But ‘BLESS’ is back! We have a new space and are ready to get it nice and sweaty with you for this one. London’s own ‘Funkineven’ aka Steven Julien is shipping in to the beautiful river city for one night only!
Steven Julien (Funkineven) has a sound. His music is distinctive but far from one dimensional. Despite his most known moments prompting comparisons to producers like ‘Omar S’, his grooves recall the 808-heavy sound of early hip-hop and Detroit techno as much as they do deep house. Julien expresses that his ancestors hailing from Africa to Caribbean native Indians have played a major part in the music he creates as its woven amongst the influences of London’s rich musical heritage.
Coming up, his first musical dabblings came as a dancer, then an MC and a beat maker. Artists such as A Tribe Called Quest through to Jaco Pastorius became a regular reference points and those early jams nestled somewhere between house, soul, boogie and techno. After releasing his debut on Eglo records back in 2009 he began a more mature chapter. In 2011 he founded Apron Records with the ethos “honest electronic music” where he has had multiple releases of different projects. Apron shares his sense of simplicity and realness steering the output away from anything too polished. As the label grows it has held collaborations with other genre blurring producers such as Delroy Edwards, Seven Davis Jr., Shanti Celeste and Jay Daniel.
Over the past few years, the London native has grown to become a skilled and soulful technician whether perched behind a pair of decks or a sequencer and will bring the party and burst a dance floor wide open. Don’t be silly, you gonna wanna be a part of this.
On the support we have the ever volatile Huge Jackman and DJ Speed to warm you up and wear you out! These young guns are fire in the booth if you don’t already know it.
