The Drifters are an institution...
Very few vocal groups have remained popular for over forty years, and in an area notable for its lack of consistency, the Drifters' longevity is almost without parallel.
The Drifters' doo-wop and R&B/Soul sound evolved from the groups that put close harmony to the songs of Tin Pan Alley before and during the Second World War.
The Drifters made a radical improvement to this style by introducing gospel to popular music, the group helped create the beginnings of rock 'n' roll and in the early fifties rapidly became the most popular act among black recording groups.
The Drifters provided the soundtrack for a generation with more than a decade of successful record releases, with classics like "Under the Boardwalk", "Save the Last Dance for Me" "My Girl" and "Saturday Night at the Movies".
The Current lineup of the group features leader Billy Washington, born in Los Angeles California in 1939, he joined shortly after the Drifters' formation in the
mid fifties, coming from a background in professional sports, developing a love for singing and performing while attending church and later in the armed services.
Today the Drifters remain as popular as ever with concerts and cabaret appearances encompassing the same sparkling formula that results in live performances of
un-equalled entertainment and excitement.
In the history of popular music there are few vocal groups who qualify as legendary members of the Hall of Fame...
The Drifters are such a group!!!
